About the Director

Portrait4portrait6Obie Varnado is an award-winning, television news photojournalist based in Chicago. From the time he was a freshman at Columbia College Chicago, Varnado knew he wanted to tell stories using film. He has spent the past 25 years capturing national and international news stories.

Varnado was born in New Orleans but grew up splitting his time between his father there, and his mother on the South Side of Chicago. As a child, he discovered a love of drawing, painting, playing the trumpet, and martial arts. When he was 16, his uncle gave him a 35-mm camera and encouraged him to make use of it. From that moment, Varnado began to see the world through the lens of a camera.

Varnado is a graduate of Columbia College. He is the winner of four Emmy Awards, two Associated Press Awards, two National Press Photographer Association Awards and two National Association of Black Journalists’ Awards. Varnado has traveled the globe for assignments, but distinguished himself by covering the funeral of Pope John Paul II in Rome in April 2005.
